About Museum Of Tropical Queensland

The Museum of Tropical Queensland

The Museum of Tropical Queensland

The Museum of Tropical Queensland is the only branch of the Queensland Museum north of Brisbane. On Flinders Street in Townsville, our iconic building looks across Ross Creek in the city.

Our focus is on researching and interpreting the cultural and natural heritage of tropical Queensland.

The present museum opened in 2000 on the site of an earlier, smaller building. Its new and modern displays explore life in the tropics from pre-historic times to the modern era.

The star attraction is the HMS Pandora gallery. Sent to catch the famous Bounty and her mutinous crew, the Pandora sank off the coast of Cape York in 1791. Hundreds of amazing artefacts have been recovered from the wreck and are on display.

Be a part of the Gun Team on HMS Pandora and learn how to load and fire a cannon, just the way they did in the 1700’s! Running out the Gun takes place at 11am and 2.30pm daily.

One of our most popular areas for kids is the Enhanted Rainforest, which focuses on one of North Queensland’s most iconic ecosystems, transporting visitors into the light and shade of Tropical Queensland’s rainforest environment.  Built around an awe-inspiring recreation of a quandong tree and featuring a slide and rope bridge, children can learn about rainforest plants and animals in a safe and fun environment.

We also host a series of visiting displays from other museums. This brings fresh and engaging content that locals might not otherwise get a chance to see.

We spent a wonderful few hours here, our grandchildren had a lovely time. We enjoyed seeing their delight at the exhibits, and the fact that they are able to touch & play was an extra bonus. Young grandson loves his dinosaurs & was thrilled that there was a whole crate of them to play with. The granddaughters loved the lego (as did we) and we had a beautiful morning tea at the coffee shop. Excellent facility that was a pleasure to visit.

Went yesterday morning to see the dinosaur exhibit and was treated by far more to see! I loved learning more about the Pandora, and including the kids in the discovery was great! My son loved the search and find part of the exhibit, and was pretty pleased when he managed to locate everything on the list. He also loved the rainforest section, trying to find all the bugs and spiders! Was such a great experience, and even though it was really busy, there was heaps of room to move and the museum was lovely and cool. Will keep an eye out for what's coming up next on our next visit to Townsville.
